Greens Respond To AEU Resolution On League Tables

Statement by Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens Spokesperson on Education:

“What this resolution does is send a very strong message to Julia Gillard about how serious teachers concerns are, about the use of the NAPLAN test data and its possible misuse.

“The Federal Government needs to heed these concerns and respond, to stop paying lip service to teachers’ concerns and to have a proper discussion on the way to go forward.

“We acknowledge that the AEU and its members feel very concerned about this issue.
“They have voted for a boycott of the tests, but we hope it doesn’t have to come to that.

“The problem is that the NAPLAN test as it currently stands is too narrow and any simplification of its data could only be viewed as inaccurate.

“We hope that the message gets through to Ms Gillard that the Government has three months to act to seriously address these concerns. The Government should start clearing this up immediately.”
