Teacher Alliance calls for:
- Agreements between the AEU and the government should be brought to mass meetings to be discussed and voted upon.
- No secret deals without any mass meeting or branch delegates meeting.
- Membership consultation through all levels of the AEU. We need to increase the participation of the membership at regional meetings and at the regional level. The union also requires an all out campaign to increase the number of delegates to our State Conference.
- When negotiations are stalling then we need to organise a comprehensive, determined, smart campaign. This would include:
o Industrial action when necessary.
o A PR/Ad campaign
o A community campaign, to gain the support of other unions/organisations, political parties and involve them in our campaign.
o Joint public meetings, media meetings, joint leafleting of shopping centres
o Vibrant, highly visible rallies through the main streets of the city not hidden strolls through the back streets and parks.
- Mass meetings should be the time when the membership is brought ‘up to speed’ by short, sharp reports and ample time for input from the rank and file (the people who actually have to work under the conditions or take the industrial action).
- Members would hear from members from different schools and regions and make fully informed decisions. This would build momentum, unity and motivation to sustain a campaign.
- This is also the way to rebuild the base of the AEU. Earnest industrial action will bring about dramatic rises in the number of teachers and SSO’s joining the union.
Union Democracy
- All organisers and industrial officers should be elected and would be accountable to the AEU membership, who elected them.
- The AEU magazine would print all points of view and also print all resolutions submitted by sub-branches. This way all members know what others are concerned about, hear different points of view and find out how other sub-branches deal with issues.
